The Garden District is comprised of residents who are committed to the improvement and preservation of neighborhood properties, improvement of neighborhood safety, establishing and preserving our local community and increasing property values.
We sponsor and participate in many activities throughout the year. The following is a summary of some of our current activities:
Block Watch Program:
The city police department works with neighborhood participants to
form block watch programs. During past neighborhood picnics, Officer
Christy Wood has spoken about neighborhood safety, drug issues,
personal safety, and other matters. The Garden District currently
has block watch programs on Garden Avenue, Wallace Avenue, and
Foster Avenue. Block watch programs have been formed on other
streets, but may have lost participation. The Garden District
encourages neighborhood safety programs on every street within the
District, and assists neighbors in forming their own watches.
Governmental Interaction:
The Garden District works as a unified group to approach city and
county agencies and governmental personnel to report code violations
that could endanger residents, properties, or reduce property
values. Such violations include abandoned or dangerous vehicles or
appliances, noise disturbances, suspicious activities such as
potential drug sales or other actions, and illegal removal of trees
or street signage.
The Garden District membership plans to appeal to the city to install additional streetlights throughout the District. Current lighting is minimal at best, and poorly placed where trees have grown large enough to block the light. Street lighting is important to ensure driving and walking safety, and to reduce the potential of illegal behavior. The membership would also like to request additional stop and yield signs throughout the area. Many of the streets within The Garden District are not marked, and most drivers speed through, causing frequent accidents. By working as a large, unified group of concerned residents and voting citizens, we will have a stronger presence at council and other meetings and through newspaper publicity.
Another advantage of the Garden District is to allow neighbors to present a united front for issues that affect the District and the Coeur d'Alene area.
Community Yard Sale:
The Garden District hosts an annual district-wide garage sale
every summer. All participants kept their merchandise on their
property and retained all proceeds. The large scope of the sale is
intended to encourage residents to discard those unwanted items, to
further home improvement projects, and to attract a greater number
of buyers than single garage sales. We provided display and
classified advertisements in the CDA Press and the Nickel’s Worth.
